Nicole Curby is an award-winning audio producer, oral historian and journalist.

She’s passionate about collaborative and sound rich documentary.

Living on Dharawal country near Wollongong, NSW, Nicole has worked across Australia and Indonesia.

Currently, Nicole is producing ABC Illawarra Drive, until June 2023

Prior to that, Nicole produced The Wait podcast, a collaboration with friend and refugee Mozhgan Moarefizadeh. The series explores how Australia is pushing its borders out and takes listeners into the lives of asylum seekers and refugees caught in Indonesia.

The Wait won Best Serialised Story at Third Coast International Audio Festival Awards, 2021, also known as ‘the oscars of radio’.

Nicole was also a producer on Journo, which won a New York Festival Radio Award. Hosted by Nick Bryant, and coming out of the Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Deadset Studios, the series tackles the challenges facing journalism today.

Committed to facilitating diverse voices and perspectives, Nicole works collaboratively and has mentored a range of women and gender diverse producers. Her work emphasises the intimacy and nuance of audio and the expansive, imaginative possibilities of sound.

Nicole's work has been published by The Guardian, ABC Radio National, The Saturday Paper, Deutsche Welle, The Monthly and Overland

She has produced audio for UTS Impact Studios, Deadset Studios, Big hART, Audiocraft, Whooskaa, Nova and NewsCorp.

Nicole has received a Walkley grant for freelance journalism, and a Judith Neilson Institute grant for Asian journalism.

Her productions have won a Third Coast International Audio Festival Award, an Amnesty International Australia Media Award, an Australian podcast Award, an Australian Commercial Radio Award, and was a finalist in the UN Day Media Awards. 

With a background in history and oral history, Nicole has carried out research for Native Title claims, contributed to museum, art and online exhibitions, books and history workshops. She has conducted an oral history project with Aboriginal elders in NSW, interviewed for the National Library of Australia, and a range of local collections.

In 2016 and 2017 Nicole lived in Indonesia, where she reported for, produced and edited Asia Calling, an award winning regional current affairs program that collaborated with journalists from Afghanistan to The Philippines.
