Peaceful Rebels of Poso

Poso, a remote province in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, is reeling from a vicious religious conflict.Terrorism has taken root in its wake. Despite the simmering resentment, a group of fiercely independent women are forging pathways to peace.

In a place where religion is everything, and not having one is incomprehensible, Lian Gogali manages to break the rules. She’s from a Christian family, and lives unmarried with a Muslim man. She makes a bold claim, saying she’s spiritual and secular, rather than a practicing Christian. But she works closely with the most respected religious leaders, dedicating herself to interfaith dialogue. Since she opened Mosintuwu women’s school, hundreds of women have begun building bridges in the face of hatred.

I travelled to Poso to find out how a community learns to live together again after turning on each other in the most violent way.

Broadcast on ABC Radio National’s Earshot.
